San Diego – A gang member accused of murdering a rival gangster outside a Lincoln Park liquor store was expected in court Wednesday to learn whether he is fit to stand trial.
A mental competency hearing for Martrell Johnson was scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. in downtown San Diego. Johnson allegedly killed 20-year-old Joel Carmichael outside Dr. J’s liquor store the night of Oct. 20, 2008.
The 19-year-old defendant is also charged with the attempted murder of three others who were near Carmichael when he was shot in the head.
Johnson was arrested within months of the slaying, along with three co-defendants that included his older brother Martray Johnson.
