A suspected shoplifter is vying for the title of America’s dumbest criminal – after being caught stealing a clock from a police station. Michael Marquez was waiting in an interview room to be questioned after being held on suspicion of shoplifting from a store in Panama City, Florida. As a detective watched from outside the room Marquez reached up and took a clock off the interview room wall and stuffed it into his backpack. The detective entered the room and immediately retrieved the wall clock. Marquez, 34, and Dennis Baugham, 51, had been arrested after they were spotted fighting under Hathaway Bridge in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Officers found the two men in possession of a shopping cart that had been taken from a nearby store. They also had a stash of brand new camping equipment including a tent, a camping stove, and camping fuel, which police suspected had been stolen. Both men were taken to Panama City Police station while detectives made inquiries about the alleged stolen goods. While left alone in the interview room Marquez reached up and took the clock. Both men were booked into the Bay County Jail and charged with possession of the stolen shopping cart. Marquez faces an additional charge of petit theft for stealing the clock.
