Grandmother arrested after police find knives, meth pipes and open pill bottles next to her grandchildren
A grandmother was arrested after police say they discovered drugs and knives surrounding the bed where her young granddaughter slept peacefully at her Sacramento home.
Neighbors of Martha Bagby said the 64-year-old woman needs serious help after police discovered large knives, meth pipes, plastic bags with meth residue and open pill bottles surrounding the five-year-old girl.
Bagby’s six-year-old grandson was also at home at the time.
Officers only happened upon the shocking scene by chance, when they came to Bagby’s home on Saturday afternoon to serve a search warrant for someone else, who was not at home at the time.
But when they entered the house, they were appalled to find drugs and weapons out in the open, in the vicinity of Bagby’s two grandchildren.
Both children were found to be uninjured but they are now under the care of Child Protective Services.
No information was available on the whereabouts of their parents.
‘I’m trying to picture knives all around her. It’s very bad,’ one of Bagby’s neighbors, who lives near the elderly woman in the Meadowview neighborhood in the southernmost part of Sacramento, told KOVR-TV.
Meadowview is known for drug and gang violence.
Bagby has a criminal record that includes charges for DUI and drug related incidents.
She was arrested on Saturday and charged with child endangerment, along with misdemeanor charges for possession of drug paraphernalia.
She is being held at the Sacramento County Jail. Her bail is set at $50,000.
‘She needs help spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and every way possible; and I hope she gets that. In fact, I’m going to start praying for her tonight, because that’s really bad, and the children,’ another neighbor told the local news station.
